15.2.1 - Does your university as a body support and/or organise events aimed to promote conservation and sustainable utilisation of the land, including forests and wild land?

Having some world-class disciplines such as geology and agriculture and natural resources, Islamic Azad University of Mashhad is involved in protecting forests and the optimal use of untouched lands through long-term contracts with agricultural jihad organizations as well as natural resources and forestry organization. This university aims at acting stronlgy and powerfully toward this issue to keep the land for next generations.

15.2.2 - Does your university as a body have policies to ensure that food on campus is sustainably farmed?

Islamic Azad University of Mashhad Branch has about two hundred hectares of large land with agricultural and educational uses in its Golbahar Town campus. A large part of the land is dedicated to sustainable agriculture and even there are plans to have a food site in Golbahar area with an international perspective.

15.2.3 - Does your university as a body work directly to maintain and extend existing ecosystems and their biodiversity, of both plants and animals, especially ecosystems under threat?

Ecosystem is a sacred and blessed term that has a special weight in our academic paradigms. Management of plants and ecosystems and social responsibility toward this is our goal. In the views of our academics the support of plant and animal protection campaigns is always considered as a conscious movement and also a spontaneous student movement.

15.2.4 - Does your university as a body offer educational programmes on ecosystems (looking at wild flora and fauna) for local or national communities?

In systemic and ecosystem thinking, healthy living is achieved from the optimal relationship between living and non-living organisms. Therefore, the Islamic Azad University of Mashhad, in cooperation with the municipality, provides basic education to citizens, students and their families in order to properly protect plants and animals through cultural centers. Curricula are very closely related to international standards.

15.2.4 - Does your university as a body offer educational programmes on ecosystems (looking at wild flora and fauna) for local or national communities?

The Islamic Azad University of Mashhad, has prepared and compiled a joint project entitled Ecotourism in cooperation with the Iran Tourism and Tourism and Cultural Heritage Organization, to educate land dwellers and citizens about the proper use of land. Wise maintenance of the earth contributes significantly to the durability and survival of the earth.Moreover, the Islamic Azad University of Mashhad, has set up a research institute for dry environments under the sponsorships of the scientific reference, which has attracted the attention of high-ranking provincial and national officials.Sustainable land management includes benefiting a development-oriented planet that maintains its current position and creates new terrestrial resources for the future.

15.3 Supporting land ecosystems through action

As mentioned previously, Islamic Azad University of Mashhad is extremely sensitive to the category of ecosystem as it believes that an ecosystem deals with the life of the world, both living and non-living. In collaboration with the Natural Resources Organization, the university has trained a group of students called environmentalists and uses the students' presence in operational work.

15.3.2 - Does your university as a body have a policy to identify, monitor and protect any IUCN Red Listed species and national conservation list species with habitats in areas affected by
the operation of your university?

Islamic Azad University of Mashhad Branch has a Department of Genetics and Biology as well as a Department of Zoology in which concerns about extinct animal generations are considered.

15.3.3 - Does your university as a body include local biodiversity into any planning and development process (e.g. construction of new buildings)?

In line with local biodiversity by sciences derived from biotechnology, Islamic Azad University of Mashhad has been able to move towards green management of construction, and on the other hand, in the physical engineering of university buildings, the view of not using destructive environmental equipment has been considered.

15.3.4 - Does your university as a body have a policy to reduce the impact of alien species on Campus?

Islamic Azad University of Mashhad Branch has considered the growth of native and productive plants in all faculties, blocks, and campuses. Most of the open spaces of the university are allocated to flowers and plants. Also, on a special day called Tree Planting Day, it promotes local biodiversity.

At the Islamic Azad University of Mashhad Branch efforts have been made to create opportunities through partnership with other organizations such as Jijhad agricultural organization in maintaining land ecosystem.

15.4.1 - Does your university as a body have water quality standards and guidelines for water discharges (to uphold water quality in order to protect ecosystems, wildlife, and human health
and welfare, etc.)?

In a joint project with the Khorasan Razavi Regional Water Organization, professors of civil engineering belonging to the Islamic Azad University of Mashhad describe water drainage standards, and this important act is being implemented in the province. Renewable energy sources have an important role in sustainable development and the Islamic Azad University of Mashhad has developed a progressive policy in this regard in collaboration with the Dry Environment Research Institute.

15.4.2 - Does your university as a body have a policy on reducing plastic waste on campus?

Islamic Azad University of Mashhad Branch has encouraged incentive policies to reduce waste together with the Mashhad Municipality Waste Organization.  When transported to landfills, waste is segregated in multiple stages with the least possible damage to the environment. Even some of the waste is reused in various ways in the recycling cycle.

15.4.3 - Does your university as a body have a policy, process or practice on waste disposal - covering hazardous materials?

Within the framework of research projects, Islamic Azad University of Mashhad, has been able to generate electricity out of waste materials. In the current conditions of the research project, it is going through the stages of feasibility and sample production.
